What is Naturopathy?
Originating in Europe, Naturopathy is a holistic system of medicine that has been practiced for hundreds of years. Qualified Naturopaths use a combination of the latest scientific research, traditional philosophies and empirical evidence in their practice.
Naturopathic medicine recognises the interconnection of all body systems and organs, addressing the whole person rather than symptomatic prescribing.
Naturopathic medicine is guided by 6 founding principles which are still adhered to today, they are:
- The healing power of nature
- Identify and treat the cause
- First, do no harm
- Doctor as teacher
- Treat the whole person
- Prevention is better than cure
Through adhering to these principles, naturopaths aim to identify and remove disturbing factors contributing to ill health while instituting a more healthful regime. Gentle therapeutics are used to help stimulate the healing power of nature and strengthen weakened or damaged organs /systems.
What can you expect from a naturopathic consultation?
An initial naturopathic consultation lasts over an hour. During the consult, the practitioner will undertake a thorough holistic assessment including physical, mental and emotional health, social and family history, dietary analysis, as well as conduct a physical examination which may include blood pressure, pulse, iris, tongue and nail analysis.
An individualized treatment plan is then tailored based on the information gathered. The treatment may include dietary and lifestyle recommendations, nutritional support, herbal medicine or flower essences.
